Elections to the European Parliament usually take place in June of the election year. For this election, the Council of the EU (made of representatives from the governments of EU countries), with the agreement of the EP, decided to move the elections to May.

The elections take place during a range of several days. Different countries like to hold their elections at different times (for example, some usually hold their elections on a weekday, while others usually hold their elections at the weekend).

In the United Kingdom, the elections will take place on Thursday 22 May 2014. Polls will open at 7.00am (07.00) and close at 10.00pm (22.00).

According to the Electoral Commission, there are three ways to vote:

"In person at a polling station

  By post

By proxy (someone voting on your behalf)" (Link to source)

If you are voting in person, you vote at the polling place specified by your local council. If you are registered to vote, you will receive a poll card telling you where you should go to vote. You can also contact your local council for details on where you should go. (Link to source).

If you need more information on how to vote, you can consult the Electoral Commission's voter registration website or get in touch with your local council (London borough council websites are listed in the More information section).
